Rep. Blackburn: Obamacare Destroyed Health Insurance Industry

By    |   Monday, 14 April 2014 02:15 PM EDT

The federal government spent billions of dollars and eviscerated the nation's health insurance industry to accommodate perhaps 3 million people who did not have insurance, Rep. Marsha Blackburn said.

The Tennessee Republican told Fox News' "America's Newsroom" on Monday that the cost to sign up the 7.1 million people the White House said enrolled in the program totaled $4.4 billion in grants to states for their websites and nearly $1 billion on the federal Obamacare website, which "did not work."

Because of delays in implementing the healthcare law, Blackburn predicted there would be a "brick by brick pulling apart" of Obamacare. She said people would experience multiple problems because healthcare was no longer a "competitive, open marketplace."

The bottom line, Blackburn said, is that Obamacare is a "debacle" that lawmakers need to begin to "unravel." She suggested Congress "take it apart" and "replace it with reforms that are going to work."

Blackburn said reforms are needed to "put the patient at the center of the healthcare system and allow individuals to make their choices.

"Open it up, and let people buy whatever health insurance they want from whomever in the country — something that fits their needs at the price they can afford," she said.
