Maine Kills Gun Safety Course for High Schools

By    |   Monday, 25 February 2013 01:03 PM EST

Maine lawmakers have shot down a bill that would have required public high schools to offer a firearms safety and training course, The Bangor Daily News reports.

“I’m against a mandate on the schools or in any way adding this kind of thing to the curriculum,” said Rep. Bruce Macdonald, House chairman of the Education and Cultural Affairs Committee.

The committee killed the bill by a vote of 11-1.

The newspaper said committee members liked the idea of an optional gun safety course for teens, but didn’t want to mandate it without funding because schools are already overburdened.
