Former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright on Thursday unleashed a scathing denunciation of President Donald Trump amid the furor over his attacks on a group of minority congresswomen, declaring he "does not speak for us."
In a series of tweets, Albright wrote Trump is "is dividing our country and dehumanizing those with whom he disagrees. That is dangerous and wrong."
"Like other Americans, I expect the president to try and unite our country," she wrote. "It's part of any chief executive's job description. It's what the 'U' stands for in USA.
"As a refugee whose family fled Fascism and Communism, I learned early in life that there is much evil in this world," she added. "But I also learned early about a land across the sea where freedom was cherished and whose ideals inspired people all over the world.
"The time has come for all of us, from every part of the political spectrum, to reclaim America's proud heritage by saying no to division and hate and by participating actively in our democracy on behalf of the common good," she continued, concluding:
"Today, we have a president who does not speak for us; we must, therefore, speak up for ourselves."
The comments by Albright, who served in the Clinton administration, were the latest in a controversy that has roiled the White House since Sunday, when the president first denounced the congresswomen, though not by name, urging them to “go back and help fix the totally broken and crime infested places from which they came."
Three of the four targets, Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., and Ayanna Pressley, D-Mass., were born in the United States. Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., came to the country as a refugee of Somalia when she was a child.
The House on Tuesday night voted largely along partisan lines to condemn the tweets as racist, but Trump has continued his criticism.
