Black people should unite and help turn the down-and-out city of Detroit into a thriving metropolis again, Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan says.
"Detroit can be a great, great city again," Farrakhan said in an address during the Nation of Islam's Saviour's Day convention in the Motor City,
according to CBS Detroit.
"Opportunity is here, but the disunity is also here … Detroit can be the new mecca. It can be great, great city. And it's 83 percent black."
Farrakhan also praised Detroit Police Chief James Craig, saying, "I really like [him]. I know you aren't supposed to like police, but there are some good ones.
"I believe he is a good man and we can work together to make Detroit the No. 1 city in America for police-community relations."
The crime-ridden city which is plagued by urban blight declared bankruptcy in 2013 and has been struggling to get back on its feet.
