Los Angeles Rams owner Stan Kroenke will reimburse the NFL nearly $600 million paid to the city of St. Louis over the team's relocation, league owners decided.
NFL owners approved a deal Tuesday that forces Kroenke to pay a majority of the $790 million settlement with St. Louis, The Wall Street Journal reported.
The league's 31 other teams that previously contributed about $7 million apiece — or more than $200 million toward the settlement — will not be refunded those amounts, WSJ reported. Kroenke will pay the balance, which had been fronted by the league to pay the settlement.
Taxes are expected to increase Kroenke's tab to more than $600 million, WSJ reported.
ESPN on Tuesday morning first announced news of the owners' decision.
The settlement announced last year ended a 4½-year-old lawsuit filed after the Rams exited St. Louis for Los Angeles before the 2016 season. City officials alleged that the team violated the NFL's relocation policies and cost the region millions of dollars in amusement, ticket, and earnings tax revenue.
NFL owners had approved the Rams' move to L.A., though Kroenke signed an indemnification clause to protect his colleagues from costs that could arise over the relocation.
The Rams, who defeated the Cincinnati Bengals in the Super Bowl in February, now play in SoFi Stadium, which cost more than $5 billion to build.
