House Republican Conference Chair Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., on Tuesday warned that efforts to reinvigorate the economy could backfire if the coronavirus outbreak causes overcrowding at hospitals.
President Donald Trump on Monday said he may lower the guidelines and “recommend new protocols to allow local economies to cautiously resume their activity at the appropriate time,” despite health care experts recommending that social distancing practices continue for the time being.
“There will be no normally functioning economy if our hospitals are overwhelmed and thousands of Americans of all ages, including our doctors and nurses, lay dying because we have failed to do what’s necessary to stop the virus,” Cheney tweeted on Tuesday, in response to a tweet from Food and Drug Administration head Dr. Scott Gottlieb, who issued a similar warning.
“There’s a strong and understandable desire to return to better times and a functioning economy,” Gottlieb wrote. “But it should not be lost on anyone that there's no such thing as a functioning economy and society so long as covid-19 continues to spread uncontrolled in our biggest cities.”
Trump told Fox News on Tuesday that he hopes to “have the country opened up and raring to go by Easter,” which is on April 12 this year.
"This cure is worse than the problem," he said, adding, "in my opinion, more people are going to die if we allow this to continue."
