The industry for sales of legalized recreational cannabis is on the rise more so than the tobacco industry, and Donald Trump's administration would be more focused on a showdown with the industry if it were not busy with other matters, according to Axios.
The $6 billion industry will improve to $50 billion in sales between now and 2026, according to analysis by Cowen & Co.
Attorney General Jeff Sessions has publicly opposed the legalization of marijuana. "I'm not sure we're going to be a better, healthier nation if we have marijuana being sold at every corner grocery store," he said in February.
Three state attorneys general have called on Sessions to clarify his plans for the laws that have legalized the recreational use of the drug in some states, according to US News & World Report.
Colorado Attorney General Cynthia Coffman said that legalization efforts in her state have gone "better than I thought they would," according to US News & World Report.
As the industry grows, the public appears to support marijuana legalization. According to a Quinnipiac University poll, 71 percent says the government should not enforce federal laws against marijuana in states where its legal; 59 percent say marijuana should be made legal in the U.S., and 93 percent say legalized marijuana should be availabe by prescription.
