Lara Trump to Newsmax TV: I Know How Media Twists News

(Newsmax TV's "America Talks Live")

By    |   Thursday, 16 August 2018 05:03 PM EDT

Lara Trump told Newsmax TV on Thursday her presidential father-in-law is on the money about insisting on a free press while at the same time fighting against an endless stream of "fake news" about his administration.

And Lara, who is married to President Donald Trump's son Eric, says she is well aware of how the media can spin the facts, having worked five years at the CBS tabloid news show "Inside Edition."

"I totally agree with the president here . . . The media will take things they'll twist it around," Lara told Dr. Gina Loudon on Thursday's "America Talks Live." "I used to work in the media. I was with 'Inside Edition' for five years.

"And it is very clear how you can take a sound bite, you can twist it around, you can insert in into a story in a very specific place and make somebody look totally different than what they meant – and we see it happen all the time."

The commander in chief Trump continued his war against the press Thursday, blasting "the fake news media" as "the opposition party."

Trump took to Twitter to accuse The Boston Globe of being "in collusion" with other newspapers for running editorials criticizing his negative statements about the press.

"The Boston Globe, which was sold to the the failing New York Times for 1.3 billion dollars (plus 800 million dollars in losses & investment), or 2.1 billion dollars, was then sold by the Times for 1 dollar," President Trump tweeted. "Now, the Globe is in collusion with other papers on free press. Prove it!" he tweeted.

In another missive, he tweeted: "There is nothing that I would want more for our country than true freedom of the press. The fact is that the press is free to write and say anything it wants, but much of what it says is fake news, pushing a political agenda or just plain trying to hurt people. Honesty wins!"

Lara said Trump's declarations about the press are true.

"They mischaracterize things, they mis-portray things, their goal is to ruin the reputation of this president," she said. "The problem they're having, Gina, is that this president continues to win for the people of this country . . . The readership of many of these newspapers many of these news outlets is falling because people don't want to hear the nonsense.

"All the American people care about is seeing results, and they're feeling it every single day."

She said president's tax cuts, his successful war against the Islamic State and his talks with North Korean strongman Kim Jong Un are among the stellar examples of his leadership.

"Honestly, I think that's what people care about, and they're tuning out the fake news because they're sick and tired of the nonsense," she told Loudon.
