House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, R-Calif., on Thursday blasted tech giant Google for displaying "Nazism" as one of the ideologies of the California Republican Party, calling the listing "a disgrace."
"Sadly, this is just the latest incident in a disturbing trend to slander conservatives," he added.
A Google search for "California Republican Party" apparently returned with a sidebar result listing Nazism as an ideology alongside "conservativism" and "market liberalism," The Hill reported. The reference is now gone.
A Google spokesperson insisted to Politico, however, search results are not biased toward any political party, suggesting instead the "Nazism" tag was scraped from the source in an automated process that "occasionally" lets such errors through.
"This was not the result of any manual change by anyone at Google," the spokesperson told Politico. "Sometimes people vandalize public information sources, like Wikipedia, which can impact the information that appears in search."
The mistake comes in advance of California's statewide primary elections, which are set for next week.
McCarthy also lashed out at technology companies Tuesday for having an anti-conservative bias.
"Social media is being rigged to censor conservative voices. We will not be silenced,” the No. 2 House Republican wrote in a tweet with an attached video elaborating on his criticisms of Silicon Valley firms.
Other conservatives have echoed that refrain. The Republican National Committee and President Donald Trump's re-election campaign pressured Facebook and Twitter on alleged bias in a May 17 letter.
