President Donald Trump's plan for police reform will include protections for both law enforcement and the community in general, but defunding departments is "an untenable proposition, White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany said Thursday.
"The president's message is he will secure the streets in this country," McEnany said on Fox News' "America's Newsroom." "His first preference is always (with) local leaders big and small and when they didn't do their job, the president said 'I will secure our streets.'"
The president is at the point of approaching various stakeholders, including law enforcement and community leaders so that a policy will be reached that will allow the "appropriate amount of reform," she added while taking into account and addressing "what we saw in that horrendous, horrendous video of the death of George Floyd."
Meanwhile, Democrats are pushing to defund police, even if some are claiming that instead, they want to make awarding money to departments contingent on their behavior.
"It's kind of like the light version of defunding the police, but make no mistake, defunding of the police means defunding of the police," she said. "Democrats are signaling that this is where they would like to go, and defunding our police officers is an untenable proposition, one that would cause mass havoc as we saw in LA when they announced removing $150 million from the LAPD and we saw a 50% spike in homicides."
