More people seem to be interested in Democratic presidential contender Julian Castro.

According to NBC News, search interest on Google for the former Obama administration official spiked more than 2,400% during the first Democratic presidential debate Wednesday night.

Castro, who also served as the mayor of San Antonio from 2009 through 2014, reportedly helped his position greatly in the first debate by being strong on immigration, climate change, filibuster, and police reform.

"If people didn't notice before, they will now," wrote The New Republic.

"Maybe the rest of the field has been sleeping on him," wrote The National Review.

"Castro Brings Fire and Facts, Pummels Beto on Immigration," read a headline in The Daily Beast.

One pointed moment specifically discussed by many major news outlets was Castro calling out former Rep. Beto O'Rourke, D-Texas, for his failure to decriminalize undocumented border crossings.

"Let's be very clear, the reason that they're separating little children from their families is that they're using section 1325 of [the Immigration and Nationality Act], which criminalizes coming across the border, to incarcerate the parents and then separate them," Castro said.

"Some of us on this stage have called to end that section, to terminate that, some, like Congressman O'Rourke have not," Castro said, calling out his fellow Texan. "I think it's a mistake, Beto, I think it's a mistake."
