Former FBI Director James Comey was a "hack politician," not a law enforcement professional, and he should be worried Attorney General William Barr and the office of the inspector general are going to investigate the beginnings of the probes into the campaigns of President Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton, Sen. John Kennedy, R-La., said Wednesday.
"I think they'll find that all roads lead to Mr. Comey," Sen. Kennedy told Fox News' "America's Newsroom." "Why he did what he did, I don't know, but it is breathtaking to the extent that he has hurt the FBI, which is the premier law enforcement agency in all of human history."
Earlier Wednesday, Comey told CBS News he disagrees with comments from Barr that the FBI "spied" on Trump, insisting the agency "investigates," and Barr's conclusions on special counsel Robert Mueller's report were "misleading."
"Mr. Comey is not the only one up here in Washington, but he is part of the Washington insider political elite," Kennedy said. "They think they're smarter than the American people. They think they're more virtuous than the American people."
Further, Washington's elite did not think Americans were "smart enough" to pick a president in 2016, so Comey and others "tried to put their thumbs on the scale," Kennedy said. "I think Mr. Comey is lashing out now because he knows what's coming."
Further, he said, many Democrats are "not happy unless they are unhappy" and they do not like that the Mueller report recommended no indictments for Trump.
