Joey Odoms, the national anthem singer for the Baltimore Ravens, has resigned.
His resignation was announced on his social media accounts. He did not give any specific reasons for stepping down even as the battle over some players kneeling in protest during the anthem continues throughout the NFL.
On his Facebook page, Odoms wrote:
The Washington Post noted Odoms is a member of the Maryland National Guard, who served tours of duty in Afghanistan.
In a later Facebook post, he added: "Fans who attack players for protesting, (a right in which I fought to defend) but are simply not interested in understanding why, is the reason I am resigning."
The Baltimore Sun quoted a spokesman for the football team as saying: "We greatly appreciate the work Joey did for us and we thank him.”
