Democrat presidential candidate Joe Biden’s campaign on Monday detailed its exhaustive efforts to keep Biden and those around him from catching or spreading the coronavirus, Politico reports.
Although Biden has mostly stayed at home during the coronavirus pandemic, Politico notes that when he does go out, the airplanes and SUVs he travels in are meticulously cleaned with disinfectant, as are the microphones, lecterns, and paperwork that he touches when giving speeches. All guests at his events are temperature-checked and required to stay in cordoned-off areas. Biden himself is rarely seen without a mask, even when inside his own home, where only a limited number of staffers are allowed inside.
“We don’t want any more Americans to contract the virus,” Biden’s deputy campaign manager Kate Bedingfield told Politico, when asked why the campaign was so cautious. She did not specify Biden’s age, 77, as a reason, but the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention note that people in their 60s or 70s are at a greater risk of severe illness if they contract the coronavirus.
“What we consistently hear from people is that they’re frustrated by how [President Donald] Trump has engaged over the summer — that he doesn’t follow public health guidelines while they’re not going to funerals and are sharing in the sacrifice for 6-7 months now,” Bedingfield added. “They're frustrated when they see Donald Trump behaving irresponsibly at a political event.”
Trump has repeatedly attempted to ridicule Biden for wearing a mask and practicing social distancing during the coronavirus pandemic, which Trump has refused to require at his campaign events.
“Have you ever seen the gyms with the circles? That’s his crowd," Trump said at a campaign event in Winston-Salem, N.C. At another event in Latrobe, Pennsylvania., Trump asked: “Did you ever see a man that likes a mask as much as him?"
