Americans Seeing More of Jill Biden on Campaign Trail

By    |   Monday, 01 October 2012 08:04 PM EDT

As Election Day nears, Americans are seeing more of Jill Biden on the campaign trail.

“We want as much of her time as we can get,” senior Obama campaign adviser David Axelrod tells Politico.

Biden, who holds a doctorate degree, teaches community college English and has a stepson who served in Iraq — assets that neither her husband, Vice President Joe Biden, President Barack Obama or first lady Michelle Obama has, Axelrod tells Politico.

The Obama-Biden campaign hopes Jill Biden can connect with teachers, veterans, members of the military and their families, and women, Axelrod said. These groups are critical to an Obama victory on Nov. 6.

“She is as grounded and as normal a person as you can find,” Axelrod was quoted as saying. “I think the fact that she’s not someone who feels that comfortable at the front of a room speaking — unless they’re students — speaks to who she is. She is really genuine.”

Jill Biden has not campaigned alone in some of the battleground states, including Florida, Virginia and Ohio. Her standard stump speech at a recent “Women for Obama” event in New Hampshire included themes common to the campaign: the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act Obama signed to help women fight for equal pay, as well as his naming of record numbers of women to Cabinet-level posts and the federal bench, including two female Supreme Court justices.

“I want to ask you to give everything you can for Barack and Joe between now and Election Day,” she said, according to the news organization. “Obviously, you’re doing that or you wouldn’t be here this morning.”
