JFK Country Retreat on Market for $11 Million

By    |   Thursday, 31 October 2013 07:39 PM EDT

Billed as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, the house that John F. Kennedy and wife Jackie built has gone on sale for an eye-popping $11 million.

Lying amid the plush rolling hills of Virginia, the splendid, sprawling, four-bedroom, five-bath ranch-style house was finished in 1963 and, Realtor.com says, it will bring back memories of the grand old days of Camelot.

The Kennedys built the home on the magnificent 166-acre estate — which they dubbed Wexford — from scratch as a country retreat for them and their children,  John Jr. and Caroline.

Named after the county in Ireland where the Kennedy family had roots, the estate included a pond, a swimming pool, and a tennis court as well as a rundown underground bunker erected by the Kennedys in case of emergency.

The house, now painted a pale yellow color, is in a quiet, tree-lined area of Marshall, Va.,  and the listing agent hopes to keep tourists away by expressly asking for “no drive-bys.”

Although the Kennedys could retreat to their beachfront family compound in Hyannis Port, Mass., they deeply loved Wexford because they designed and decorated it themselves as an alternative to the official country residence of Camp David.

They stayed in the 5,050-square foot house just a handful of times before JFK's assassination in November 1963.

After her husband's death, Jackie and her children visited the property one more time before selling it for $225,000 in November 1964.

Later residents included Nancy and Ronald Reagan, who leased the property during his 1980 presidential campaign.
