The ESPN SportsCenter anchor who caused a firestorm last fall for tweeting that President Donald Trump is a white supremacist is leaving her 6 p.m. ET slot to join an ESPN microsite.
Jemele Hill, who is heading to The Undefeated, which fuses sports, race and culture, told Variety the SportsCenter gig "wasn't my calling," and asked for the shift.
"The function of [SC6] is not necessarily built for anchor commentary," she told Variety, which first reported the move. "So much of my career at ESPN – almost exclusively at some points – has been in commentary."
"They hired me as a columnist. I've been giving my opinion since day one," she added.
Sports Illustrated reported Hill's expected to leave SC6 the first week of February; she has got three years remaining on her ESPN deal.
She has also stood behind her remarks four months ago, when she tweeted Trump "is a white supremacist who has largely surrounded himself w/ other white supremacists," and called him "the most ignorant, offensive president of my lifetime," SI reported.
"I have more regrets about the medium because as most of us find out every day in some form or fashion that Twitter is not necessarily a place for nuance," Hill told SI.
"Twitter's not even really a place where you want to have some extensive conversation, especially about race. . . . I don't regret what I said or even the language that I used. It's just the where. I think the where is problematic."
She will move to Washington for the new job.
"If this was supposed to be a ruse to bury me somewhere in a corner of ESPN, I didn't get that feeling," she told Variety. "I know it may not be the sexiest story to tell, but the truth is I miss writing and reporting."
