Ivanka Trump, President Donald Trump’s daughter and adviser, condemned the El Paso shooting that left at least 20 people dead, writing on Twitter Sunday that “white supremacy, like all other forms of terrorism, is an evil that must be destroyed.”
“As our nation mourns the senseless loss of life in El Paso, Texas, and Dayton, Ohio, and prays for the victims and their loved ones, we must also raise our voices in rejection of these heinous and cowardly acts of hate, terror and violence,” she said. “White supremacy, like all other forms of terrorism, is an evil that must be destroyed.”
Ivanka Trump also endorsed the call by Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., for the enactment of so-called red flag laws that give law enforcement greater authority to confiscate weapons from dangerous individuals.
“Congress should enact Red Flag laws/ Extreme Risk Protection Orders in EVERY state and increase resources dedicated to mental health support,” she said.
The El Paso gunman reportedly shouted “pro-Trump” and “anti-immigrant” statements Saturday when he fired off shots, and police are investigating an anti-immigration manifesto left behind online.
The manifesto writer expresses concern that an influx of Hispanics into the United States will replace aging white voters, potentially turning Texas blue in upcoming elections and swinging the White House to the Democrats. Federal prosecutors say they are treating the shooting as a domestic terrorism case.
