A Virginia school board member has reportedly called Israel an "apartheid" state that "kills Palestinians."

The Washington Free Beacon said Fairfax County school board member Abrar Omeish made the comments on Facebook and Twitter accounts belonging to her. The posts celebrated the end of Ramadan.

"Hurts my heart to celebrate while Israel kills Palestinians & desecrates the Holy Land right now," Omeish, who is Muslim, reportedly said in the posts. "Apartheid & colonization were wrong yesterday and will be today, here and there. May justice + truth prevail."

Aaron Taliaferro, a former Fairfax County Schools parent, told the Free Beacon that Omeish's posts show why some parents are in favor of recalling Omeish.

"I think it's a biased comment that reflects a lack of understanding of a complexity of the issues in the Middle East, especially in regard to Israel and Hamas specifically," Taliaferro said. "[The post] is a great illustration of why we want to recall her — not because she feels that way, because this is a young woman who does not grasp complexity and nuance."

Taliaferro took two of his children out of Fairfax schools before the 2020-2021 academic year began so they could attend in-person classes at local Catholic schools.

Omeish's reported comments came as the deadly fighting between Israel and Hamas intensified. At least 103 people have been killed since Monday, including 27 children, and more than 580 wounded, the health ministry in Gaza said, according to AFP.

The comments were posted on Twitter at 7:18 a.m. on Thursday and just minutes later on Facebook.

The remarks were blasted by social media users.

"Your inability to care about Jews in Israel makes me wonder if you are able to care about Jewish children in Fairfax County schools," one person wrote. " You should resign. There’s no place for bigotry in our schools."

Another wrote: "I am so disappointed in this post -- you have been building so many bridges here in Northern Virginia, and the work that you have done was leading to greater understanding between our different faiths. This post is divisive, not helpful to your Jewish constituents whom you represent and not helpful to a dialog that could have led to deeper understanding."

One man on Facebook posted: "I am a Jewish person and I cannot ever trust again that I can count on you, a person who ostensibly represents me, to support my family if we need it from you. I proudly voted for you before, and will never do it again. But you probably don't care anyway."

And one person added: "Extremely disappointing that you decided to use your platform to promote biased, hateful, bigoted propaganda instead of educating people and promoting peace. You should not be in a leadership role for our students."

The Fairfax County School board did not immediately respond to the Free Beacon’s request for comment.
