New iPhone Software Takes Step Toward Artificial Intelligence

By    |   Wednesday, 10 June 2015 12:36 PM EDT

A feature in the upcoming version of Apple's iPhone software, called touch prediction, will be able to guess where users will tap their phone screens.

According to Business Insider, the feature is mentioned in the developer's documentation for iOS 9, an operating system that was unveiled on Monday.

Details about the new feature are minimal, but it appears apps with touch prediction built into them will be able to predict when a user is about to tap the screen to open the app. This means the app will start a fraction of a second earlier, and there won't be a case in which a user taps his or her screen to find that nothing happens.

During Monday's event, Apple spent nearly 2 1/2 hours explaining the features of iOS 9, which will be available for users to install onto their iPhones in a few months.

The touch prediction feature could be seen as a form of artificial intelligence, a path some say humans should not be heading down.

"I am in the camp that is concerned about super intelligence. [At] first the machines will do a lot of jobs for us and not be super intelligent. That should be positive if we manage it well," Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates said in January. "A few decades after that, though, the intelligence is strong enough to be a concern. I agree with Elon Musk and some others on this and don't understand why some people are not concerned."

Astrophysicist Stephen Hawking said last month, "I think the development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race."
