A majority of Americans think people should scrap playing indoor sports this winter given the current surge of COVID-19 infections — but there’s a strong political divide on the issue, a new poll showed.
The PBS NewsHour/NPR/Marist survey found that 58% of the more than 1,000 respondents disapprove of indoor team sports.
But women, residents of the Northeast, senior citizens, and Democrats were the most worried, with at least 62% of each group disapproving.
Men, residents of the South, younger people, and Republicans were more supportive, with upwards of 41% of each group in favor, the poll showed.
The poll found a strong political divide on other issues involved with indoor sports during the pandemic’s surge.
- 58% said the government should be able to impose restrictions on indoor sports teams because of the coronavirus, including 83% of Democrats. However, 67% of Republicans were opposed.
- 52% of Democrats were against allowing student-athletes to travel in order to play against other schools; 41% of Republicans were in favor.
- 73% of Democrats said they were concerned or very concerned about indoor team sports spreading coronavirus to their local community; 68% of Republicans said they weren’t very concerned or not concerned at all.
The poll’s margin of error was plus or minus 3.7 percentage points.
