A majority of Americans agree with Donald Trump that a wall should be built along the U.S. border to prevent illegal immigrants from entry, a new poll has found.

According to a Rasmussen Reports survey of 1,000 likely voters conducted Aug. 17 to 18, 51 percent of likely voters are in favor of building a wall, compared to 37 percent who are against it and 12 percent who are unsure.

The figures are much higher for Republicans: 70 percent believe a wall should be built with just 17 percent saying they disagree and 13 percent who are undecided.

Eighty percent of voters also back Trump's plan to deport all illegal immigrants who have been convicted of a felony. Just 11 percent are opposed.

Among Republicans, support for the idea stands at a whopping 92 percent with only 4 percent in disagreement.

Trump outlined his proposals to crack down on illegal immigration in a paper released this weekend which also called for an end to automatic citizenship for children born to illegal immigrants in this country.

The survey found that 54 percent of voters disagree with the current federal policy that says a child born to an illegal immigrant gets automatic citizenship.

And just 34 percent of those polled are in favor of President Barack Obama's plan to protect as many as 5 million illegal immigrants from deportation, while most voters think the United States is not aggressive enough in deporting those who are in the country illegally.

Meanwhile, over a number of years the survey has consistently found that voters want the border with Mexico to be secured before addressing the issue of amnesty. Specifically, in May, 63 percent of voters said securing the border is more important than legalizing undocumented workers already living in the United States.
