Vice President Joe Biden has to avoid making a “big gaffe” in Thursday’s vice debate against Paul Ryan, while the Republican must avoid sounding like a policy wonk, according to conservative commentator Mike Huckabee.
“This is going to be I think a much better debate than some have thought and I say this for the reason that a lot of people sell Joe Biden short. Joe’s a great communicator,” acknowledged Huckabee in an exclusive interview with Newsmax.TV on Wednesday.
While the vice president has been gaffe prone, he’s been “pretty doggone effective at stirring up the crowd because he knows how to connect with ordinary people,” observed the former Arkansas governor.
“What he has to do is avoid the big gaffe. He has to keep from saying something that will be the only thing people remember but he’ll go into it very prepared,” he explained.
Ryan on the other hand, is articulate and can speak volumes on the federal budget.
“He can talk very effectively and answer things on his feet very well,” observed Huckaee. “What Paul Ryan has to be careful of is not to go in sounding like the policy wonk [who] is speaking to the committee members at some house subcommittee. He’s got to speak not to the heads but to the hearts of the American people. I think he’s more than able to do that and I think he will do it. “
