Gun Incident at Texas School Renews Safety Debate

Saturday, 23 April 2011 02:08 PM EDT

HOUSTON (AP) — Some parents are clamoring for stricter security measures at a Houston elementary school where a kindergartner accidentally fired a gun that injured three students in a crowded cafeteria.

But school security and other experts say such incidents are rare among younger students and deserve a different approach than spending limited resources on such things as metal detectors.

Experts say more effective prevention efforts include working directly with parents and students on gun safety, better training of faculty and staff, and building better trust between teachers and students.

The Houston school district says as a result of the Tuesday incident at Ross Elementary, it has decided to focus on educating students and their parents on the potential dangers of guns. The district says things like metal detectors are not economically feasible.
