Highlights for Children — one of the most popular kids' magazines in America — will begin depicting families headed by same-sex couples in future issues.
A letter explaining the new policy, sent to a reader by Highlights editor-in-chief Christine French Cully, was obtained by The American Conservative's Rod Dreher.
"The themes we cover in our magazines are broad and universal — relatable to children trying to navigate childhood. Because children are our focus, we rarely show a full family in our illustrations, instead focusing on showing the child the reader relates to," Cully writes.
"When we do show families in the magazines, we make it a point to include diversity … We show adoptive families, blended families, multi-generational families, and multi-racial families.
"In the future, we will depict same-sex families in our magazines in a manner consistent to the way all diverse families are depicted. This is in support of our mission to help children become their best selves and understand that all families, including theirs, are important."
The Ohio-published magazine had been criticized in the past for its resistance to introducing same-sex couples in its pages.
Published since 1946, Highlights for Children is geared towards youngsters aged 6-12 and is known for such iconic features as "Hidden Pictures," "Goofus & Gallant" and "The Timbertoes."
