Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is requesting federal aid to help cover a possible $3 billion shortfall the state will face due to the coronavirus pandemic.

She told the Wall Street Journal's "The Journal" podcast on Wednesday that the virus has “wreaked havoc" on the economy. Whitmer has imposed some of the strictest lockdown measures in the country. 

She called Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell’s idea to let states declare bankruptcy dangerous. 

"I think that that's dangerous,” she said. “I think that it's not particularly well thought out. Maybe it was an off the cuff remark. I certainly hope that it's not a strategy because it would be devastating for us as a nation.”

She said Michigan will need federal aid to come close to balancing its budget. McConnell is opposed to bailing out states. 

She said the shortfall would be “devastating” and “not unique to Michigan.”

"Everyone of us is going to have to make tough decisions in this moment and the more flexibility and assistance we can get from the federal government the better, because COVID-19 has wreaked havoc on all of our economies," she said.

In terms of additional support, she mentioned creating a national strategy around the supply chain and manufacturing.
