GOP Slams Democrats for 'Hypocrisy on Women'

By    |   Friday, 02 August 2013 02:56 PM EDT

Republican groups are taking Democratic leaders to task for avoiding criticism of New York City mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner and San Diego Mayor Bob Filner over their treatment of women.

The communications directors of the National Republican Congressional Committee, Republican Governors Association, Republican State Leadership Committee, Republican National Committee, and National Republican Senatorial Committee sent out a joint statement on the controversies Friday, Politico reports.

"Democrats’ hypocrisy is appalling," they said. "With their silence, they are sanctioning the actions of Bob Filner and Anthony Weiner and numerous others who have assaulted, harassed, and preyed on women."

Nine women have now come forward to say that Filner sexually harassed them, and Weiner has acknowledged he continued to send sexual text messages to women even after he resigned from Congress in 2011 over the same thing.

The GOP statement singles out President Barack Obama, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for failing to publicly criticize Weiner and Filner.

"Where’s the outrage?" the statement says. "Could it be that Democrats only pretend to care about women when it’s politically advantageous? . . . Does this sound like a party that cares about women?"

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney declined to comment on the scandals Wednesday.

"The President believes his job is not to comment on those issues," Carney said.

Pelosi, however, has spoken out in strong terms against both Filner and Weiner, calling for the San Diego mayor to resign and for the New York mayoral candidate to withdraw from the race. Other Democrats in Congress have also called on both men to step aside because of their behavior.
