White House Coronavirus Task Force member Adm. Brett Giroir said Sunday there will be 40 million doses of a COVID-19 vaccine by the end of next month — but that mitigation efforts have to continue.
In an interview on ABC News’ “This Week,” Giroir said the nation has to “flatten the curve” of a soaring, nationwide virus spread.
“When you cannot physically distance everybody needs to wear a mask in public spaces. That’s absolutely critically important. They do work,” he said.
“We’re going to have to do things like limit attendance or close bars, close in-door restaurants because that’s very important. If we do these things combined with the testing that we have, we can flatten the curve. If we do not do these things, the cases will continue to go up,” he warned.
“If we do that we’ll flatten the curve, slow the spread, and get us to that time when we have a vaccine. And it’s not very far off.”
According to Giroir, there could be 20 million doses of a COVID-19 vaccine by the end of November, and another 20 million by the end of December.
Giroir also defended President Donald Trump amid criticism for him not attending meetings of the White House virus task force.
“I’m not concerned that the president doesn’t attend,” he said, adding Vice President Mike Pence attends and briefs the president.
