The bookstore at Gettysburg National Military Park has stopped selling items with Confederate flags in light of last week's shooting of nine people at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston.
Gettysburg, where the Civil War's most significant battle was fought, said Thursday that it would no longer sell 11 items that use the flag as the sole feature.
"Stand-alone depictions of Confederate flags have no place in park stores," said National Park Service Director Jonathan Jarvis.
Items with both the U.S. and Confederate flags will continue to be sold — along with books, DVDs, and other educational materials "where the image of the Confederate flag is depicted in its historical context," Jarvis said.
The National Park Service had asked concessionaires to pull Confederate-flag clothing, stickers, and other items.
Nine Emanuel AME members — including its pastor, the Rev. Clementa Pinckney, 41 — were allegedly shot to death June 17 by Dylann Storm Roof, 21, who was arrested the next day by authorities in North Carolina.
Pictures showing Roof posing with weapons at Confederate grave sites and burning an American flag have turned up on a website that was registered to him in February. The site included a 2,500-word white supremacist manifesto and sported pictures of him holding Confederate flags.
Roof is charged with nine counts of murder and a weapons offense. Bond was set at $1 million on the weapons charge — and he is in jail pending court appearances on the other charges in the coming months.
President Barack Obama delivered the eulogy at Pinckney's funeral on Friday. He was in the South Carolina Senate and had served in the state House of Representatives.
Nearly 620,000 troops died during the Civil War, which lasted from 1861 to 1865,
The Washington Times reports. As many as 50,000 soldiers combined died during the three-day battle at Gettysburg.
