Former President George H.W. Bush, 92, and his wife Barbara, 91, who had been unable to attend President Donald Trump's inauguration, will be available to attend this Sunday's Super Bowl in Houston and will perform the coin toss, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said Wednesday.
"I approached them back in December and they were very enthusiastic about wanting to participate," Goodell said in his annual state of the league address.
"Obviously, you all know both of them had a little bit of a setback health-wise recently. I heard from both of them and they're excited and anxious to be here. We're honored to have them. I think it'll be a great way to start the game."
George H.W. Bush, 92, had written to President Donald Trump his attending the inauguration would "likely will put me six feet under," according to Time.
President Bush-41 was hospitalized in Houston for two weeks with a severe case of pneumonia, but was released Monday. His wife Barbara was released a week prior after treatment for bronchitis.
Houston, the site of Super Bowl LI, is the hometown of the elder Bush family, having moved there after their term in the White House.
