In addition to the devastation along the East Coast, Hurricane Sandy has also delivered a blow to political junkies who will be forced to miss some of their daily fix of presidential polling.
Gallup, Investors’ Business Daily, and Public Policy Polling have all suspended or curtailed their daily tracking polls as a result of the storm.
Gallup Editor-in-Chief Frank Newport said in a statement that “Gallup has suspended polling for its daily tracking as of Monday night and will reassess on a day-to-day basis.
“The ultimate effect on the overall picture of polling between now and this weekend, including election polling, will depend on what happens as a result of the storm, about which we will have a better understanding of on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week.”
The tracking poll run by Investor's Business Daily and TIPP had a note on their website noting, “Due to Hurricane Sandy, the IBD/TIPP poll will not be updated today. We hope to have new numbers on Wednesday. Our thoughts go out to everyone impacted by the storm.
Public Policy Polling, according to various reports, also suspended it landline tracking poll.
The hurricane has knocked out power and phone service for millions, making it difficult for the pollsters to get an accurate sample. Regardless, other daily tracking polls, such as Rasmussen Reports and The Washington Post-ABC News tracking poll, are soldiering on.
