Fifty-three percent of adults say abortion should remain legal "only under certain circumstances," according to a Gallup poll released Wednesday.

Additionally, a record-high 29% will only consider like-minded candidates on the issue of abortion, a hot-button issue receiving plenty of attention ahead of the 2020 presidential election.

Nine states have passed abortion restriction laws, while six states are considering fetal heartbeat bills or a bill banning abortion after 20 weeks. Tennessee has passed a bill that would ban abortions if Roe v. Wade is overturned.

The Gallup poll shows 58% of Americans oppose heartbeat bills.

In Democratic-led states, including Illinois, Nevada, Vermont, New York, Rhode Island, Maine, and New York, lawmakers are leading the charge to preserve abortion rights at the state level.

Conservatives have been advancing more restrictive policies over the past few years, and the issue is likely to reach the right-leaning U.S. Supreme Court at some point, fanning fears on the left that the landmark Roe v. Wade decision could be overturned or gutted.

The poll also found 60% of people do not want the Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade.
