Ford is taking its fleet of driverless cars to one of the nation's busiest cities to see how they perform on traffic-clogged roads.
The car company published a blog post on Medium that outlined its plans to use Miami as a real-world testing ground.
"We've spent years researching and developing self-driving technology, studying changing customer behaviors, serving some of the largest fleets in the country with help from our dealers, and working with governments big and small. Now it's time to pull it all together and head for the finish line" wrote Sherif Marakby, Ford's vice president of autonomous vehicles and electrification.
Marakby referenced a recent survey that ranked Miami 10th in the world on a list of cities with the worst traffic.
"Miami commuters spend an average of 64 hours in congestion per year during peak time periods — or nearly 10 percent of their total drive time," he wrote.
Ford will utilize an "operations terminal" that will house the vehicles and where they will be cleaned and maintained. All cars will have a human sitting in the driver's seat, ready to take over the controls if something goes wrong with the vehicles' artificial intelligence software.
Several car and tech companies are working on driverless cars, including Uber, Google, Apple, and Tesla.
