Demonstrators clashed with police on Friday outside the Barclays Center in Brooklyn over the death of George Floyd, an unarmed black man who was killed during an arrest in Minneapolis this week.
Thousands of protesters gathered outside the Brooklyn arena carrying signs that read, "Black Lives Matter" and "I can't breathe," among other sentiments, reported The Hill. They were advocating an to end police violence, particularly against people of color.
Video from the protest showed demonstrators chanting and throwing objects at police, said CNN.
A journalist named Jon Campbell tweeted footage from the scene, showing police forming lines at the tension-filled scene and using their batons on protesters. Additional officers can be seen squaring off with demonstrators and pushing people.
Floyd, 46, died during his arrest in Minneapolis on Monday. Bystander video of his arrest sparked outrage. It showed an officer pinning Floyd, his knee on his neck for an extended period, while the man said he could not breathe.
Minutes later, Floyd's body went limp. He was pronounced dead 90 minutes after his arrest.
The officer who had his knee on his neck, Derek Chauvin, was dismissed and was charged Friday with third-degree murder and manslaughter following three nights of protest and unrest in the city. Three other officers have also been fired.
In another explosion of tension in New York, protesters charged a Brooklyn police precinct on Friday night, joining the thousands who'd hit the streets in protest of police brutality.
The Daily News said police rushed reinforcements to the 88th Precinct in Clinton Hill, where early reports said windows were broken and some shots were fired.
The News put the precinct at around a mile from the Barclays Center, where the earlier clashes had occurred.
