An 18-year-old Florida high school student was arrested after police found an AR-15 rifle and ammunition inside his truck, an NBC News affiliated reported.

Dade City, Florida, acting police chief James Walters said there was "no reason to believe there was a threat implied" by student Dillon Xynides — but called it a "terrible decision on his part," WFLA reported.

"Poor judgment is what we can chalk this up to," Walters said.

The Feb. 23 arrest came two weeks after a mass shooting at a Parkland, Florida, high school by a former student firing an AR-15 rifle; 17 people were killed.

In the Dade City incident, a Pasco High School school administrator first noticed shotgun shells in Xynides's pickup truck — and then discovered the rifle in the passenger seat of the vehicle, WFLA reported.

He was charged with a third-degree felony for bringing the weapon on campus, WFLA reported.

"By all accounts, Xynides is said to be a very good young man with no prior disciplinary actions noted by school administration," police said in a statement. "Friends tell us he made a stupid mistake."
