Big Brother apparently is here. Federal law enforcement agencies are tracking Americans by monitoring credit cards, loyalty cards and travel reservations. And they’re doing it without getting a court order, according to a new document released under a government sunshine request,
Wired reports.

Security researcher Christopher Soghoian obtained the report. It details “Hotwatch” orders, which permit real-time tracking of individuals in a criminal investigation via credit card companies, rental car agencies, calling cards, and even grocery store loyalty programs.
The Justice Department is increasing its use of surveillance techniques on Americans with little to no judicial or Congressional oversight. Some view that as a necessary protection against protectionism and others as a violation of civil liberties.
