Sen. Nelson: Federal Response Now 'Seamless Cooperation'

(CBS News' "Face the Nation")

By    |   Sunday, 10 September 2017 01:05 PM

Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla., on Sunday called the government response to Hurricane Irma "seamless" — and far better than during Hurricanes Andrew or Katrina.

Nelson told CBS News' "Face the Nation" the problems with earlier efforts "has been taken care of now."

"There is the cooperation between the federal level, the state and the locals," Nelson, who was in Orlando, Fla., for the interview.

"That has been seamless cooperation, unlike 25 years ago in Hurricane Andrew, when you did not have that cooperation. Unlike even Katrina, when you didn't have the cooperation and the communication between the Louisiana National Guard and the U.S. military."

Andrew hit Florida as a Category 5 hurricane in 1992, and Katrina struck the Gulf Coast in 2005.

But Nelson warned there will be massive work ahead in the storm's aftermath.

"That's when [the Federal Emergeny Management Agency] is in, assisting the local governments and all the volunteers," he said.

"That's the hard, hard slog in the aftermath of the storm. And given the fact that this is now moving so slowly, and it's virtually covered up the whole state, it's going to be a massive effort, not only at cleanup, but assisting people for the long term."
