Very few voters expect to find out who the next president will be on Tuesday night, according to a new poll.
A Politico/Morning Consult poll released Monday indicates that only 17% of voters anticipate a clear winner will be announced on election night.
Poll results show:
- 18% of voters say they expect to know the election results the day after election night.
- 30% of voters say they anticipate knowing the winner within a week.
- 3% of voters say they think the process to name the next president will take longer than a month.
- 20% of Republican voters say they think a winner will be announced on election night, while 17% of Democrat voters say they expect to know the winner on Tuesday.
Politico reports that election experts have warned voters for months that election results could be delayed because of the number of mail-in ballots cast amid the coronavirus pandemic. Some states, including battlegrounds Pennsylvania and Wisconsin, don’t allow ballots to be counted until the polls close. That means it can take days to process ballots.
Overall, 32% of voters polled say they distrust the election system. Trust in determining a definite winner on election night was highest among Republican men at 23%, according to the poll results.
The Politico/Morning Consult poll surveyed 1,991 voters between Oct. 30-Nov. 1. The margin of sampling error is plus or minus 2 percentage points.
