Moviegoers stayed away in droves from films with an eco-message, proving the disconnect between Hollywood and viewers, according to the Washington Times.
“Blade Runner 2049,” “Geostorm,” “Downsizing,” “An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power” and “Mother!” all bombed at the box office, the news outlet reported.
For example, Al Gore’s sequel to his 2006 documentary hit “An Inconvenient Truth” took in $3 million compared with the $24 million from the award-winning original.
“They believe climate change will bring people to the movies,” Justin Haskins, executive editor at the right-leaning, free-market Heartland Institute, told the Washington Times. “That’s wildly out of touch with how moviegoers feel about the issue.”
Even President Donald Trump made fun of global warming fears in a tweet last week urging East Coast residents to "bundle up" against a cold snap.
Doug Stone, president of Box Office Analyst, told the outlet, however, “You need to look at each individual film,” adding “Mother!” was well-liked by critics “but hated by anyone who went to see it.”
Marc Morano, publisher of Climate Depot, said, however, the films’ failures illustrate that the “climate scare continues to be nothing more than a big yawn for the public… and ticket receipts prove this.”
