President Donald Trump delivered a largely politics-free speech to an American Legion Boys Nation and Auxiliary Girls Nation gathering at the White House Tuesday — striking a starkly different tone than an incendiary address he delivered at a national Boy Scouts event Monday night.
The president offered advice and encouragement to the young people for their service and future — and noted former President Bill Clinton was also a Boys Nation member.
"Through this program, countless young people like you have been inspired to protect American interests and to promote American values," he said. "Many of us that have been in your place have gone on to become governors, members of Congress, generals and one even became a president. You know who that was?"
"Bill Clinton," the youngsters roared back, making Trump smile.
"I have no doubt you're going to — every one of you — be successful," the president told the youngsters. "Never quit, never give up. Always do what you love. Take great care of your family and your parents."
"Because of young people like you, I am more confident than ever in the future of the United States," he added. "Together we will make America greater than ever before."
In a final — and awkward moment – one female voice in the crowd asked about Trump's new transgender policy for the military — announced earlier Tuesday. Trump was stone-faced, and said quietly but firmly: "She's very rude."
