Democrats Target GOP Lawmakers With Spanish-Language Ads

By    |   Friday, 11 October 2013 04:52 PM EDT

The Democratic National Committee has launched a Spanish-language campaign targeting Republicans in key red states over the government shutdown and debt ceiling.

The effort, announced Thursday, includes robocalls and online ads on Twitter, Facebook and Google. Calls in Texas and Florida are aimed directly at GOP Sens. Ted Cruz and Marco Rubio, while calls in Arizona and Nevada target the party as a whole.

"We'll continue to hold Republicans like Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz accountable for shutting down the government and risking the full faith and credit of the United States," DNC Chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz said in a statement.

"The GOP's shutdown is hurting Latino communities nationwide and the DNC is going to make sure voters in every community know that Republicans are siding with the tea party over working families."

The DNC did not reveal the cost of the ad buy, but an aide told Politico the campaign would reach "hundreds of thousands" of voters.

The ad campaign is the third phase of a broader effort this week to hit Republicans in their own states, including House Speaker John Boehner in Ohio, House Majority Leader Eric Cantor in Virginia, and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell in Kentucky. Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul is also on the DNC's target list.

A sample script of the calls in Florida reads, "I'm calling from the DNC with a GOP shutdown alert. Senator Marco Rubio was an architect of the GOP's government shutdown and it's hurting the Latino community in Florida," according to the McClatchy Washington bureau.

"Rubio's shutdown is costing the economy as much as $10 billion a week and Republicans are ready to not pay our nation's bills." Voters are urged to call the state Republican Party to voice their concerns.

Meanwhile, the Republican National Committee announced a plan this week to place Hispanic engagement directors in key states as part of a new outreach campaign to create a year-round party presence in Latino communities.

The states are California, Florida, New Jersey, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, Texas and Virginia, reports The Hill.

The RNC reportedly plans to make similar investments in Hispanic outreach in 11 other states by the end of the year.
