Education Secretary Betsy DeVos on Thursday released a statement reacting to the alleged rape that took place at a Maryland high school, saying "we all have a common responsibility to ensure" a safe environment for all students.
DeVos released the statement before attending an event at an elementary school in the same county with Gov. Larry Hogan, The Washington Post reported.
"As a mother of two daughters and grandmother of four young girls, my heart aches for the young woman and her family at the center of this terrible crime," DeVos said. "We all have a common responsibility to ensure every student has access to a safe and nurturing learning environment."
The incident has sparked outrage, not only because of the crime itself, but whom it was allegedly committed by — the accused are in the country illegally.
The White House called the alleged crime a consequence of failed immigration policy, and a former campaign aide to President Donald Trump used the incident to warn against the proposal that Maryland become a sanctuary state for illegals.
