The U.S. Department of Defense on Wednesday released its blueprint for implementing artificial intelligence into military equipment, saying machine driving learning and decision-making "is expected to impact every corner of the Department, spanning operations, training, sustainment, force protection, recruiting, healthcare, and many others."
The report comes as China's military is working to adopt AI and autonomous technology as quickly as it can to match America's powerful armed forces.
The U.S. strategy calls for rapid adoption of AI in all aspects of the U.S. military and depends on the Pentagon working with major tech companies to run projects.
"AI will not only increase the prosperity of the nation but enhance our national security," Dana Deasy, the department's chief information officer, said at a news briefing Tuesday.
"We must adopt AI to maintain our strategic position and prevail on future battlefields," Deasy said.
AI will inevitably become more prevalent in combat, and China is poised to take the lead when that happens as Chinese tech corporations work side-by-side with the government, according to MIT Technology Review.
Thousands of Google employees last year signed a petition protesting the company's involvement in an effort known as Project Maven, a Pentagon drone program. Google then backed out.
