Tweets Preview Final Debate, Capture Al Smith Dinner Laughs

Friday, 19 October 2012 10:15 AM EDT

The next and final debate will take place on Monday at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Fla., with foreign policy as the theme. Look for anticipation of the campaign’s final big event to build over the weekend on Twitter, as it started to on Friday.

Chief political columnist for Politico Roger Simon gave a little preview:
“Obama: ‘The next debate is on foreign policy. Spoiler Alert: We got bin Laden.’” - (@politicoroger)

-----------------

And media mogul Rupert Murdoch pointed out the importance of Monday’s showdown:
“Hard to believe Gallup's seven per cent to O today. Would mean amazing sweep. Next seven days, especially last debate, crucial." - (@rupertmurdoch)

-----------------

CBS News correspondent Margaret Brennan foreshadowed with this tweet what could be a critical meeting between Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Ambassador to the U.N. Susan Rice as the Obama campaign continues to face questions about the attack in Benghazi, Libya.
“@HRClinton meets with @AmbassadorRice @StateDept this morning. #Benghazi” - (@margbrennan)

-----------------

Benghazi is also on the mind of former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, who tweeted on Friday morning:
“Why is media certain Pres called Benghazi an "act of terror" when days later his admin insisted it was a spontaneous YouTube-inspired mob?” - (@RumsfeldOffice)

-----------------

Pivoting to less serious matters, Presidential candidates took a break from the campaign trail to crack some jokes for charity at the Al Smith dinner in New York City.

Fox & Friends co-anchor Steve Doocy:
“Mitt at #AlSmith dinner proved that he's not that evil robot in BHO ads. Mitt was actually funnier than BHO "America's greatest speaker" - (@sdoocy)

-----------------

Cardinal Timothy Dolan, who, according to Clyde Haberman of the New York Times, “despite protests from conservative Catholics, angered by President Obama’s support of same-sex marriage and his readiness to have employer health insurance cover birth control… invited the president to the shindig along with Mitt Romney:
“If I only sat down with people who agreed with me, and I with them, or with those who were saints, I’d be taking all my meals alone." - (@CardinalDolan)

-----------------

Campaign reporter Garrett Haake of NBC News:
“Boy... Nothing unites the parties like cracking jokes about Joe Biden. #AlSmithDinner” - (@GarrettNBCNews)

-----------------

Fox News White House correspondent Ed Henry tweeted a joke by Mitt Romney:
“Romney Mormon jokes: says he's usually "designated driver" at fancy dinners & his first rule of debate prep: avoid "alcohol for 65 yrs" - (@edhenryTV)

-----------------

And finally, CNN political reporter Peter Hamby pointed out on Friday morning:
“In Columbus, just heard education-themed radio ad from Harvard law grad Barack Obama mocking Romney's "two degrees from Harvard" - (@PeterHamby)
