The District of Columbia's local government will not pay for a military parade in the nation's capital, the mayor's office said Wednesday.
According to The Washington Times, a spokesperson for Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser was critical of President Donald Trump's idea for a military parade — which he thought up last year after witnessing a similar show of military might in Paris on Bastille Day.
Anu Rangappa told the Times the District will play no part in footing the bill for the parade if the idea comes to fruition.
"In the meantime, we do know that, just like the wall, he will have to pay for it," she said.
In a separate interview with WUSA, Bowser said her office has not heard from the federal government about any parade plans:
Trump instructed the Pentagon to draw up plans for a national military parade. The idea is just an idea for now, but it has received backlash from several Democrats. Some Republicans have deferred to Trump in lieu of saying whether or not they would support the parade.
