Actor Robert Davi — who’s played heroic cops, ruthless gangsters, and even a James Bond villain — starred in his real-life role as a staunch conservative Friday and said the Republican Party needs a major overhaul to survive.
“It’s the whole GOP,’’ Davi told Newsmax TV’s “The Steve Malzberg Show.’’ “They sit around wanting to communicate to the everyman, but they don’t sit around saying how do we get new ideas out there? It’s very frustrating to me.’’
Davi — whose films include “Die Hard,’’ “The Goonies,’’ “Showgirls,’’ and “Maniac Cop 2," and is a noted jazz singer and interpreter of Frank Sinatra songs — accused party leaders of “going about it all wrong."
“For some reason it’s like every cabal, every cabal doesn’t want to let or open up the air to really find out what the heck is going on inside, and then maybe come up with some really new, riveting ideas.’
“I do know the everyman, I do know what effects them, what hits them emotionally. There’s a way of bridging … the tradition that people have with a world that is changing and a world that has to accept its change.’’
Davi, who starred as the vicious Franz Sanchez who battled Agent 007 in the Bond flick “License to Kill’’ — said Republicans missed a big chance to introduce change during the sequester crisis.
“What I said to some of the GOP people … with this big sequester nonsense going on [is] why did the GOP not start pushing a flat tax right now?’’ he said.
“Why did they not say, here’s a formula, it’s a flat tax across the board and here’s discussion. If they all got together it would be bold, it would be a solution, but they keep kicking the same ball down the path to destruction.’’
