Cuccinelli: Out-of-State Billionaire Fills Va. Rival's War Chest

By    |   Wednesday, 14 August 2013 05:30 PM EDT

The Virginia governor's race heated up further on Tuesday as Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli slammed the California cash cow who is pumping hundreds of thousands of dollars into his opponent Terry McAuliffe's war chest.

"We lead in every facet of this race except dollars in the bank and I would venture to say that we may have out-raised Terry McAuliffe within Virginia," Cuccinelli, a Republican, told "The Steve Malzberg Show" on Newsmax TV.

"The reason there's such an imbalance is you've got this billionaire California environmentalist who's decided to spend what looks about $400,000 a week from now until the election. Wouldn't that be nice to be able to do?"

Story continues below video.

Cuccinelli was referring to billionaire and clean-energy philanthropist Thomas Steyer, who is shelling out $400,000 on TV commercials critical of him.

McAuliffe is a former Democratic National Committee chairman and a close adviser to Bill and Hillary Clinton.

"Virginia has no limits and corporations can give and particularly for my opponent, so can unions," Cuccinelli said.

"[McAuliffe] received over $2 million from unions; again, that's out-of-state money that has come in and Virginia is a right-to-work state. That's a real concern for a lot of us who care about freedom and who care about job creation."

Cuccinelli said that his campaign will also focus on what he believes are the failed policies of the Obama administration.

"People who want to send a message to Washington are going to want to vote for me in this election, and we've seen that effect before in Virginia. It's real. It's legitimate," he said.
"We were the first to push back. In 2010, just in Virginia, we had six Democratic congressmen. Now we have three, all in one year."
