Chicago Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo, who graduated from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School where 17 people were murdered, urged people to stay strong and said he hoped the tragedy "brings everyone together."
Rizzo's remarks came in a tweet on Wednesday evening following the shootings at the school in Parkland, Florida, just north of the city of Coral Springs.
In November, Rizzo had donated $150,000 to Douglas to pay for lights to the baseball and softball fields, according to ESPN.
Rizzo, 28, was expected back in South Florida on Thursday, according to the sports network.
Nineteen-year-old Nikolas Cruz was charged with 17 counts of premeditated murder Thursday morning following the shootings at the school.
