Expert Warns Majority Of Americans Will Be Infected By COVID-19

A top infectious disease expert on Sunday warned a vast majority of Americans will be infected by COVID-19 — and said officials shouldn’t be broadcasting “a false sense of security.”

In remarks to NBC News’ “Meet The Press,” Dr. Michael Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota, cautioned the nation’s officials to give Americans the full story about what they are facing.

“We’re riding this tiger, not directing it,” he said of the coronavirus pandemic that is hitting the United States.

“We’re going to see 60-70% of Americans infected with the virus,” he said.

Yet, he lamented, officials aren’t providing that direction to Americans.

“We can’t give people a false sense of security,” he said.

“What we have to do is to figure out how not just to die with this virus but also how to live with it, and that’s not what we’re doing,” he said.
