Texas has reported record numbers of hospitalizations due to the coronavirus on two consecutive days, as the state continues to reopen after allowing its stay-at-home order to expire at the end of April, CNBC reports.
Texas now has 2,056 patients hospitalized with COVID-19 as of Tuesday afternoon, over one hundred more than on Monday, when 1,935 were reported hospitalized, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services. Figures from the department show a fairly steady rise in coronavirus hospitalizations since the beginning of June.
“We are still evaluating whether or not there was any increase because of Memorial Day and now whether or not there could be an increase in the aftermath of these very large protests that have taken place,” Texas Gov. Greg Abbott said on Monday, according to the Houston Chronicle.
"We must address the disproportionate impact of COVID-19 on underserved and minority communities and ensure that anyone who needs a test can have one,” Abbott also said on Monday. “As many Texans continue to gather for protests, the state is also taking steps to address potential surges in COVID-19 cases.”
